I have began taking belly dancing classes (dança do ventre) and things are starting to happen. Areas are opening up in my life on a subtle level. I have more energy to pursue what I want to do and stand my ground. I feel myself connecting to ancient goddess powers. My teacher brought up Aphrodite, the goddess of love. This myth occurs throughout all cultures, in different ways, with different names, but every culture has a goddess of love. To connect with her means to nurture, to bring in, to connect to Earth energy Pacha Mama.

Today she mentioned Persephone and how in matriarchal society the myth goes a little differently from the Patriarchally influenced Greek-Roman version where she is kidnapped. A passive stance... a victim of circumstance.
In this version Persephone actually chooses to go down to the underworld, to visit her sister. She chooses to enter the world of darkness, of death of regeneration, of rebirth. And Demeter and herself are one.
It is also connected with our feminine cycles of the regeneration of our uterus every month. Our menstrual bleeding represents our connection with all this regenrative force.

And when we menstruate every month we also are prone to being receptive to all the suffering of all women over the thousands of years of our human history or degradation, humiliation, abuse. A dark shadow indeed clouds us over. Sometimes being perceived as PMS, others a slight depression, or even physical pain in our bellies...our chakras- creative/power centers.

It is when we must nurture ourselves, with loving-kindness, with attention and compassion. We must listen to the visions and messages that come to us through dreams and silent moments. It is when we are a strong channel of connection to the creative source.

The Native tribes knew about this power and would send the females to the 'tenda da lua', the moon tents. To be with themselves. Fed by the ancient women, listening to their dreams and visions and reporting them back to the tribes chiefs and community.

Where is our voice? Time to get it back.

Here is Persephone, coming up to the surface, bringing spring back. Spring is recovering. After a year with a long winter spell, she resurfaces. She brings flowers and singing birds.
She is back.
